Nordic skiing originated in the nordic region as a way of getting about on the snow. In downhill (Alpine skiing) the whole boot is attached to the ski. However, in Nordic skiing only the toe of the boot is attached to the ski and the heel is free.
There are several styles of Nordic skiing including cross-country skiing. Cross country skiing uses narrow lightweight skis, often on prepared tracks.
Cross country skiing has two different styles – classic and skate. Classic has a diagonal stride pattern, like walking. Skate style has a V-pattern, like ice skating, and is done on a prepared track.
